What to Expect

In Session is Dun Uladh’s monthly trad night in the bar, and the format is deliberately two tiered. A slow session opens at 7.30pm, pitched at beginners and learners and played at a pace that lets people who are still finding their way around a tune actually join in rather than sit and listen. The main session follows at 9pm and runs at full speed, with the room going until around 10.30pm. Each month a different Comhaltas branch hosts, so the musicians and the repertoire shift from one date to the next. The September night is hosted by Trillick CCE.

Dun Uladh is the regional base of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann for Ulster, which is why this is a working session rather than a booked gig: the bar fills with players who bring instruments as well as with people who come to listen. Bringing a fiddle, flute, box or whistle is expected rather than unusual, and the slow session in particular exists to get newer players into the circle. The centre also runs traditional singing classes on Tuesdays through the autumn term with Oonagh McArdle, and books concerts through the year, so the session sits inside a wider programme rather than standing alone.

Getting There

Dun Uladh is on the Mullaghmore Road on the northern edge of Omagh, just off the A5 and signposted from the Omagh throughpass, with parking on site. It is roughly a five minute drive from Omagh town centre and a little over an hour and a half from Belfast. Omagh bus centre in the town has daytime services from Enniskillen, Derry, Dungannon, Belfast and Letterkenny, but there is no late service out to the Mullaghmore Road, so a taxi is the practical option after the session.
