At The Barracks · 32 Tullow Street, Carlow, Co. Carlow
After Dark are the resident Sunday night band at The Barracks on Tullow Street, and they play every Sunday rather than on a rotating schedule. The set is live covers rather than original material, pitched at getting a room dancing on the last night of the weekend, and the band has become one of the more dependable fixtures in Carlow town’s nightlife. Music starts around 10:30pm, which is late for a Sunday and tells you what kind of night it is.
The Barracks itself is a cocktail bar, live music venue and late bar rolled into one, open every day with extended weekend hours and a dance floor that gets used properly once the band starts. Having a live band rather than a DJ changes the room: the crowd skews a little older and a little more committed than the Saturday DJ night, and there is a bar garden for anyone who wants a break from the volume.
The Barracks is at 32 Tullow Street in the centre of Carlow town, walkable from anywhere in the town and about ten minutes on foot from Carlow railway station on Station Road. By car, Carlow is off the M9 Dublin to Waterford motorway and on the N80 from Portlaoise and Enniscorthy. Town centre car parks are within a few minutes’ walk, and there is a taxi rank on Tullow Street. Sunday night public transport out of Carlow is thin, so plan the journey home before you set out.
