What to Expect

The Barracks at 32 Tullow Street works as three things at once: a cocktail bar, a live music venue and a late bar with a proper dance floor. On Saturdays a live DJ takes the decks and the room shifts from bar to club as the evening goes on. It is open every day of the week with extended hours at the weekend, which makes Saturday the night the full set-up is in use.

The cocktail list is a genuine part of the draw rather than an afterthought, and it gives The Barracks a different feel to the two dedicated nightclubs further along Tullow Street. People tend to start here for drinks earlier in the evening and stay once the DJ starts, or use it as the last stop of the night. There is also a bar garden, which matters on a warm August Saturday. The venue takes private bookings for hen and stag nights, birthdays and corporate events, so a Saturday can occasionally have a large group in as well as the regular crowd.

Getting There

The Barracks is on Tullow Street, the main street through Carlow town centre, walkable from anywhere in the town and about ten minutes on foot from Carlow railway station on Station Road. By car, Carlow is off the M9 Dublin to Waterford motorway and on the N80 from Portlaoise and Enniscorthy. Town centre car parks are within a few minutes’ walk and there is a taxi rank on Tullow Street, a short distance from the door.
