What to Expect

Club Pira is Galway’s under-18s alternative night and it exists to fill a real gap: teenagers who want a gig and a dancefloor have almost nowhere to go in a city where the late scene is uniformly 18-plus. The End of Summer Bash runs three and a half hours in the early evening, entirely alcohol-free, and closes out the school holidays before the term starts.

The bill is three of Galway’s young alternative bands, Portraits, Mentality and Infrared, followed by a DJ set from DJ Ava. Demand has pushed the night up in size and the organisers have moved it into the back room at Monroe’s Tavern on Dominick Street Upper, the same room used for the venue’s late alternative club nights, which gives the bands a proper stage and PA rather than a function room setup. Organiser Ava Barry books and runs the night. Tickets go through Eventbrite and the earlier editions have sold, so booking ahead is sensible.

Getting There

Dominick Street Upper is the spine of Galway’s West End, across the Wolfe Tone Bridge from the main city centre and about ten minutes on foot from Eyre Square and Ceannt Station. City bus routes cross the bridge and stop on or near Dominick Street, and the early finish means the regular evening timetable is still running rather than night services. For anyone being collected, the Fairgreen and Jury’s car parks and the taxi rank at the top of Quay Street are the usual pickup points, as parking directly on Dominick Street is limited and metered.
