At Monroe's Backstage Room · 14 Dominick Street Upper, Galway, Co. Galway, H91 WD2H
Absent bring the 36th edition of their emo night to the Backstage Room at Monroe’s, running from 10pm to 2am. The playlist is built on the mid 2000s alternative canon and the promoters name their reference points plainly: Bring Me The Horizon, Blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Paramore and Green Day, spread across emo, pop-punk, nu-metal and alternative rock. Alongside the obvious anthems they promise the deep cuts and the guilty pleasures, which is what separates a proper scene night from a rock disco.
The Backstage Room is the smaller of the rooms at Monroe’s, so this is a tight singalong crowd rather than a big floor. Absent describe the audience they are after as scene kids, emos, punks, metalheads and anyone who has ever screamed the lyrics a little too loudly, and the dress code suggestion is simply to wear black. The night is strictly over 18s with ID required at the door, and tickets are sold in advance through Eventbrite with refunds available up to seven days before. Doors open at 10pm and the room fills quickly on these nights, so arriving early is worth it.
Dominick Street Upper is in Galway’s West End, over the Wolfe Tone Bridge from Shop Street and about ten minutes on foot from Eyre Square. Ceannt Station and the coach stands on Fairgreen Road cover Irish Rail, Bus Eireann, Citylink and GoBus arrivals. Street parking in the West End is scarce on a Friday night, so the Jurys and Dyke Road car parks are the safer bet, and taxi ranks operate on Dominick Street and at Eyre Square when the night ends.
