At Crown Front Bar · Crown Quarter, Monck Street, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford
Saturday night at the Crown Front Bar follows the same shape every week. A live band starts at 10pm, and when the set finishes a DJ carries the room through to closing at 2am. The bar is the street-facing part of Crown Quarter on Monck Street, a complex running three bars under one roof including a cocktail bar, with Kitty’s Bar next door also putting on live music from 10pm on Saturdays. Monck Street is where most of Wexford town’s late-night trade is concentrated, so the crowd tends to drift between rooms rather than settle in one, and the Front Bar is usually the busiest of the three once the band starts.
The acts come from a rotating pool of local and regional bands and solo performers rather than a single resident act, so the music changes week to week and leans towards covers and singalong sets rather than original material. Names listed on the Crown Quarter entertainment calendar for the current season include Willow Lane, Rag Doll, Still Crazy, Presto, Shane Murphy, Andrew Berry, Mick Buggy, Mary Crosbie, Darragh Byrne and Nick Murphy through August, with Lee & Fitz, Ollie Dempsey, Point Blank, Ruben Buggy, Divine Invention and Le Cheile listed into September. The venue confirms the line-up week by week rather than publishing the full season in advance, so check before travelling if a particular band is the reason you are going.
Monck Street sits in Wexford town centre, a few minutes on foot from Main Street and the quays. Wexford’s O’Hanrahan station on Redmond Square is about a ten-minute walk, with Irish Rail services from Dublin Connolly and Rosslare Europort. Drivers arrive on the N11 and M11 from Dublin, roughly an hour and forty minutes, or the N25 from Rosslare, about forty-five minutes. Monck Street itself has very limited parking, so the town-centre car parks are the easier option on a Saturday night.
