What to Expect

Wednesday is a double sale day at Wexford Farmers Co-op’s mart on the Old Dublin Road in Enniscorthy, with a calf sale from 10:00am followed by a sheep sale at 10:30am. The co-op describes the calf sale as offering excellent demand and competitive prices, and it is one of the busier fixtures of the mart’s week, particularly during the spring calving season when numbers through the ring can run high. The sheep sale that follows draws a broad range of buyers, from farmers restocking to dealers buying for onward sale. As with the mart’s Tuesday cattle sale, animals are penned and weighed ahead of time, sold lot by lot through the ring by an auctioneer, and buyers can bid either ringside or remotely through the MartEye online platform. Numbers and the balance between calves and sheep vary through the year with the farming calendar, busier for calves in spring and for store lambs and ewes later in the season. It is a working sale rather than a staged event, open to anyone who wants to watch, though only registered buyers and sellers can bid. The yard has a canteen, weighing facilities and loading pens, and, as the county’s only livestock mart, it draws sellers from across Wexford rather than just the Enniscorthy area, since the alternative for many farmers would be a longer trip into Kilkenny, Carlow or Wicklow.
