What to Expect

Tuesday is cattle day at Wexford Farmers Co-op’s mart on the Old Dublin Road in Enniscorthy, County Wexford’s only livestock mart. The weekly sale starts at 10:00am, and the co-op describes it as drawing strong farmer and factory demand, meaning both local farmers restocking or buying store cattle and meat factory agents buying finished animals for slaughter are regularly in the ring. Cattle are penned in the yard from early morning ahead of the sale, weighed, and sold through the ring one lot at a time by an auctioneer, with buyers bidding either in person from the ringside seating or remotely online through the mart’s MartEye platform. It is a genuine working agricultural business rather than a visitor attraction, so the pace and numbers on any given Tuesday depend entirely on what farmers have entered that week, but it remains one of the more reliable places in the county to see the cattle trade in action close up. The co-operative traces its roots to Co. Wexford Marts, established on this site in 1968, and it remains the only livestock mart operating in the county, giving it a wide catchment of farmers who might otherwise have travelled to Kilkenny, Carlow or Wicklow to sell. The yard has a canteen for buyers and sellers, along with weighing facilities and loading pens, and anyone is free to walk the pens before the sale to see what has been entered that week.
