What to Expect

Omagh Auction Mart is the largest of the three livestock marts still trading in County Tyrone, handling cattle and sheep from farms across the Sperrins, west Tyrone and the Donegal border country every week of the year. The sale week splits three ways. Store and beef cattle, fat cows and calves go through the ring on Mondays, suckler calves on Wednesdays, and sheep on Saturdays. Monday is the busiest of the three, with bidding running continuously from mid morning as the auctioneer works through pens of bullocks, heifers, fat cows and calves in turn.

Prices move on weight, breed and condition rather than any fixed rate, and the mart publishes a market report after each sale setting out the week’s top prices. Farmers start unloading trailers early on sale mornings, and the yard stays busy with buyers, hauliers and dealers walking the pens before the ring opens. Every weekly sale is broadcast live on the mart’s own online platform, so registered buyers who cannot make it to Gillygooley Road can watch and bid from home. This is a working trading floor rather than a visitor attraction, but nobody is turned away from the ringside and the canteen serves tea and a fry through the morning.

Getting There

The mart sits on Gillygooley Road on the western edge of Omagh, signposted off the A5 Omagh to Ballygawley road and a couple of minutes from the Omagh throughpass. There is hard standing on site for cars and for livestock trailers. Omagh bus centre, which links the town to Enniskillen, Derry, Belfast and across the border into Donegal, is a short drive away, and the town centre is roughly a fifteen minute walk from the yard.
