Newtownstewart Mart Weekly Livestock Sales

At Newtownstewart Livestock Sales · Station Road, Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone

Cattle pens at a west Tyrone livestock mart

What to Expect

Newtownstewart is the smallest of County Tyrone’s three working livestock marts and the one that serves the Sperrins side of the county, taking entries from hill and lowland farms around Newtownstewart, Baronscourt, Plumbridge and the Glenelly and Owenkillew valleys. The main weekly fixture is the Saturday cattle sale, with store cattle, beef bullocks and heifers, fat cows and calves going through the ring in lots across the morning. A separate sheep sale runs on Wednesdays.

Because the catchment leans towards hill and suckler herds rather than lowland dairy country, the entry here often looks different to what goes through Omagh or Clogher on the same weekend, and the farming press reports on trade at Newtownstewart week to week with entry numbers and top prices. Cattle are penned in the yard on Station Road from early morning and the ring opens once the entry is settled, so the hour before the sale is when buyers walk the pens and size up what is on offer. It is a small yard and a working one, with hauliers, dealers and farmers moving between the pens and the ringside rather than any visitor set-up, but there is no barrier to standing at the rail and watching a sale run. Entry numbers and exact ring times shift with the season, so it is worth phoning ahead if you are making a special trip.

There is space on site for cars and for livestock trailers. Ulsterbus services along the A5 corridor stop in the village, and Newtownstewart’s shops and pubs are a short walk from the yard for anyone stopping before or after a sale.
