Tullow Livestock Sales - Weekly Sheep Sale

At Tullow Mart · Barrack Street, Tullow, Co. Carlow

Sheep pens at Tullow Mart on a Tuesday sale day

What to Expect

Tuesday is sheep day at Tullow Mart, one of two fixed weekly sale days that make Tullow Livestock Sales one of the busiest livestock centres in south Leinster - the other being Friday’s cattle sale. The ring opens at 10.30am and it costs nothing to come in and watch. Sellers range from commercial flock owners bringing full loads down to smallholders arriving with a handful of animals, which is part of what keeps the Tuesday sale worth watching even if you have no intention of bidding.

Lambs, hoggets and breeding stock make up the bulk of the trade, sold by the lot with prices called per head or per kilo depending on the class of animal. Numbers rise and fall with the farming calendar: the sale typically builds strongly through late summer and autumn as lambs come off grass and hill flocks bring stock down, and the mart’s sheep trade regularly features in national mart reports. Alongside Tuesday and Friday, Tullow adds a Saturday weanling sale from mid-September to the end of November, so the yard runs three days a week for much of the autumn. Live online bidding is available through the MartEye platform for buyers who cannot travel.

Getting There

Tullow Mart is on Barrack Street in the centre of Tullow, a market town on the River Slaney about 20km south-east of Carlow town via the R725. From Dublin the quickest route is the M9 to Carlow and then the R725 south; the N81 through Baltinglass is the alternative. The mart yard has space for livestock trailers, and there is on-street and car park space in the town for anyone arriving without stock. Bus services to Tullow on a weekday morning are limited, so almost everyone drives.
