Carrigallen Mart trades from its yard at Calloughs on the edge of Carrigallen village, in the southeast corner of Leitrim close to the Cavan border. It runs two sale days most weeks. Monday is the evening sale: sheep go through the ring from 5pm, covering fat lambs, store lambs, ewes and lambs, ewes, breeding ewes and rams, and cattle follow from 6pm with strong heifers, bullocks, bulls, sucklers and dry cows. Saturday is the morning sale, with suck calves and runners from 10am and weanling bulls and weanling heifers from 11am.
The Saturday calf and weanling trade is what the mart is best known for, and prices made here are reported regularly by Agriland and the Irish Farmers Journal. The Irish Farmers Journal mart directory also lists a seasonal Thursday evening cattle sale that runs in March and October only. This is a working trade floor rather than a visitor attraction. Expect livestock lorries and trailers in the yard well before the first lot, farmers penning stock, and buyers walking the rows before the auctioneer starts. Online bidding runs alongside the ringside auction for buyers who cannot travel to the yard.
Carrigallen sits in southeast Leitrim near the Cavan border, reached on the R199 from Ballinamore or the R201 from Mohill and Killeshandra. The mart is at Calloughs, just outside the village, with yard space for cars, jeeps and livestock trailers on sale days. There is no railway station in Carrigallen. The nearest is Carrick-on-Shannon on the Dublin to Sligo line, roughly 30km away, and public transport into the village is limited, so almost everyone travels by car.
