At GVM Group Tullamore Mart · Arden Road, Tullamore, Co. Offaly
Monday evening is weanling night at GVM Tullamore Mart on the Arden Road, and it runs across both rings. The published sale board for Monday 17 August lists suckler cows in Ring 2 at 4pm, followed at 5.30pm by the weanling bull sale in Ring 1 and weanling heifers in Ring 2. Splitting the categories across two rings lets the mart move a heavy Monday entry without bulls holding up heifers, and buyers move between the rings to follow the lots they want. Sellers come from Offaly, Westmeath, Laois and north Tipperary, and buyers are a mix of finishers, feedlot operators and farmers restocking off grass.
Stock is penned and available to walk before each ring opens, drafted by weight, sex and breed type. The auctioneer calls each lot in the ring in the traditional style, and bids are also taken online through the mart’s live auction platform for buyers who cannot travel. Entries build through late summer and autumn as spring-born weanlings come off their mothers, so Monday numbers in September and October are usually well ahead of midsummer. GVM Tullamore has traded on the Arden Road since 1956, when it was founded as Golden Vale Co-operative Mart, and the Monday sale is one of four fixed weekly fixtures at the yard.
The mart is on the Arden Road on the eastern edge of Tullamore, signposted off the N52 and within a few minutes of the N80. There is hard standing on site for cars, jeeps and livestock trailers. Tullamore railway station, on the Dublin Heuston to Galway line, is around a 20 minute walk from the mart. More listings in Tullamore and across Co. Offaly.
