What to Expect

Saturday is the full-strength day at the Galway Market. The stalls wrap around St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Church Lane, where the market’s own history notes traders have been selling for centuries, and the count runs into the hundreds on a good week. Saturdays bring out the growers in force: bread, vegetables, plants and flowers are at their most plentiful, sitting alongside the fresh produce and locally made craft that trade every open day.

The food offer is genuinely mixed rather than tourist-facing only. The market lists Madras curry, crepes and sushi among the international cooking, plus handmade cookies and the makings of a decent picnic, so the lane works as much for a hot lunch as for a weekly shop. Craft stalls and takeaway food are available every day the market opens, which keeps the balance from tipping entirely towards produce. The market describes itself as a place people come to chat as well as to buy, and the Saturday crowd reflects that: it is slow going through the middle of the lane by late morning.

Getting There

The market is in the pedestrianised heart of Galway city, on Churchyard Street off Shop Street, a couple of minutes’ walk from Eyre Square and from Ceannt Station, which serves both Irish Rail and the Bus Eireann and Citylink coach stands. There is no parking on the market street itself. The Corbett Court, Eyre Square and Jury’s multi-storey car parks are the closest options, all within a five-minute walk, and they fill early on Saturdays, so the park-and-walk options on the edge of the centre are worth considering in high season.
