Muff runs a car boot sale on the second Saturday of each month, organised by Muff Community Forum and held in the village. It is a once-a-month fixture rather than a weekly one, which changes the character of it: sellers save up a proper clear-out for the date instead of recycling the same stock week after week, and the stall count tends to be higher than a weekly sale of the same size.
Expect the standard car boot spread of household goods, clothes, children’s things, tools, garden items and bric-a-brac, sold from vehicles and folding tables. Muff sits right on the border a few miles from Derry, so the sale draws sellers and buyers from both sides of it, and euro and sterling both circulate in the village. Bring cash in small notes.
Because the sale is community-run, the pitch fees go back into the forum’s work in the village rather than to a commercial market operator. Sellers book a table in advance rather than turning up on spec, and the booking line is the way to confirm a given month before travelling, since the season stops for the winter after the December sale.
Muff is the first village inside County Donegal on the Inishowen side of the border, sitting on the western shore of Lough Foyle about 10km north of Derry city. The community park is in the village itself. Coming from Derry it is a short run out the Culmore Road; coming from the rest of Donegal the usual approach is the N13 to Bridgend and then across the neck of Inishowen. There is parking around the village, and cross-border bus services between Derry and Inishowen stop in Muff, which makes this one of the more reachable Donegal car boots without a car.
