Leghowney Country Market

At Leghowney Community Hall · Leghowney, Barnesmore, Donegal Town, Co. Donegal

Home baking and craft stalls at Leghowney Country Market near Donegal Town

What to Expect

Leghowney Country Market trades out of Leghowney Community Hall on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, opening at 11am. It is a country market in the co-operative sense rather than a farmers’ market, which matters in practice: the sellers are members of the local society, and what is on the tables has to be grown, baked or made by the person standing behind it.

The stall list runs to freshly baked breads, tarts, jams, cakes and biscuits, farm fresh eggs, seasonal fruit and vegetables and fresh meats. Alongside the food there are crafts from local makers, including jewellery, knitwear and crochet. The baking side of a country market sells down fast, so the first half hour after eleven is when the choice is widest.

The hall is the centre of community life in this stretch of country between Donegal Town and the Barnesmore Gap, and the market works as much as a fortnightly social fixture as a shop. Anyone who wants to sell rather than buy can request a stall registration form from the hall committee.

Getting There

Leghowney sits about 7km from Donegal Town in the Barnesmore area, off the N15 Donegal to Ballybofey road. Coming from Donegal Town, head north on the N15 and follow the local signs for Leghowney off the main road. There is parking at the hall, which is the practical way to arrive - this is rural south Donegal and no scheduled bus stops at the door. Donegal Town is the sensible base for anyone travelling further, with Bus Eireann services in from Sligo, Letterkenny and Dublin, then a short drive or taxi out to the hall.
