What to Expect

Kilclooney Country Market runs on Saturday mornings in the Dolmen Centre at Kilclooney Beg, about 5km north of Ardara on the road out towards Portnoo and Narin. Trading is from 11am to 1pm, indoors, which makes it one of the more weather-proof market mornings on this exposed stretch of the south-west Donegal coast.

Like the other country markets in the county, this is a members’ co-operative rather than a general trader market. Sellers bring home baking, garden produce, eggs and handmade craft work, and everything is meant to come from the seller’s own kitchen, garden or workshop. That keeps the stall list small and seasonal, and it changes noticeably between the height of summer and the autumn.

The Dolmen Centre itself is worth knowing about beyond the market. It grew out of the Narin, Portnoo and Rosbeg community co-operative and now functions as the local hall, meeting space and visitor facility for the parish, so a market morning usually has other activity running alongside it. The market keeps its own Facebook page, which is the quickest way to confirm a given Saturday before setting out.

Getting There

Kilclooney is on the R261 between Ardara and Portnoo in south-west Donegal, and the Dolmen Centre is signposted from the road close to the well-known Kilclooney portal tomb. Ardara is the nearest town at about 5km, reached from Donegal Town on the N56 and then the R261. There is parking at the centre. Public transport out here is thin, so a car is realistically needed; Local Link operates limited routes through Ardara and the Rosses, and timings will not suit a two-hour market window.
