What to Expect

Carrick Country Market trades in the Old School building in the village of Carrick, on Saturday mornings from 11am. The market was set up in August 2011, and it is worth confirming a specific date locally before making the drive out to this corner of the county.

It operates on the country market model used across Donegal: a members’ co-operative where the rule is that goods must be locally produced, grown or hand crafted to a set standard, and sold by the person who made them. In practice that means home baking, garden vegetables, eggs, preserves and craft work rather than resold or wholesale stock. The list is short, seasonal and different every time, which is the point of the format.

Carrick, or An Charraig, is the main village at the foot of Sliabh Liag, and the market is one of the few regular indoor gatherings in a parish that is otherwise scattered across a lot of ground. For visitors working their way along the coast it is a straightforward stop: the sea cliffs, the Glen Head walks and Glencolmcille are all within a short drive, and an 11am market slots in before the middle of the day.

Getting There

Carrick sits on the R263, the coast road that runs west from Killybegs towards Glencolmcille, roughly 15km beyond Killybegs and about 40km from Donegal Town by way of the N56 and R263. It is the turn-off point for the Sliabh Liag cliffs, so the village is well signposted from every direction. There is parking in the village. Public transport is limited to the Local Link and Bus Eireann services that run along the coast road towards Glencolmcille, and their timetables are built around a couple of runs a day, so a car is the practical option for a two-hour market.
