Clara Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale has traded on the Moate Road outside Clara since 1993, which makes it one of the longest-running car boot markets in the midlands. The site runs to six acres with both indoor and outdoor pitches, and traders start arriving from 7am. There is no pre-booking for sellers and no admission charge for buyers, so both the stock and the crowd change from week to week. Car boot spaces start at €20.
The mix is a genuine jumble rather than a curated artisan market: household clearances, tools and machinery parts, clothing rails, plants, toys, DVDs and records, pet supplies, workwear and general secondhand goods sit alongside new stock from regular traders. Early is better if you are hunting for something specific, because the dealers walk the boots before most buyers arrive. The Get Stuffed cafe operates on site through the morning for breakfast and tea, there are customer toilets, and parking is free. The market draws people from Tullamore, Athlone and Mullingar as well as the immediate Clara area, and the indoor section means it goes ahead in poor weather. Sellers who want to trade simply turn up on the day and pay for a pitch.
The market site is on the Moate Road just outside Clara, roughly 4km from Junction 6 of the M6, which makes it about 15 minutes from Tullamore, 20 minutes from Athlone and 25 minutes from Mullingar. Free parking is laid on for buyers and traders on the six-acre site. Clara has a railway station on the Dublin to Galway line, though the market is a drive from the town itself.
