The old Potato Market in the centre of Carlow town has hosted a Saturday producer market for more than two decades and it is now in its 22nd year, which makes it one of the longest-running markets of its kind in the south-east. It trades every Saturday from 9am to 2pm, rain or shine, and it is free to walk around with no obligation to buy. Being a producer market rather than a general street market, most of the people behind the stalls grew, baked, caught or made what they are selling.
The regular spread covers fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, bread and baked goods, pantry staples, preserves, plants and cut flowers, hot food to eat on the spot, and a craft element that rotates with whoever is trading that week. Because the traders are mostly small producers from Carlow and the neighbouring counties, the line-up shifts a little with the season and with who has stock. It is busiest between about 10am and midday, so early is the move if you want first pick of the baking. The market sits beside the main town centre car park, which makes it an easy stop on a Saturday morning shop rather than a special trip.
The Potato Market is in central Carlow, a short walk from anywhere in the town and right beside the main town centre car park. Carlow is on the M9 motorway corridor, about an hour south of Dublin and 45 minutes north of Kilkenny, so it is a straightforward drive for day-trippers. Carlow railway station, on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line, is a few minutes’ walk from the market, and Bus Eireann serves the town from Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford. Saturday parking in the adjoining car park fills from mid-morning.
