Buncrana Country Market

At Church Street, Buncrana · Church Street, Buncrana, Co. Donegal

Country market stalls on Church Street in Buncrana

What to Expect

Buncrana Country Market sets up on Church Street in the centre of Buncrana, the largest town on the Inishowen peninsula, on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 2pm to 3pm. The hour-long slot is short by design. This is a country market in the traditional Irish co-operative sense, where a handful of local producers pool a single trading session rather than running a full day’s commercial market, and it is aimed at people already in town on a Saturday afternoon.

Stalls carry local crafts, home baking and produce typical of the country market network that has run across Donegal for decades. Buncrana sits on the shore of Lough Swilly and is Inishowen’s main service town, so the market draws shoppers in from the surrounding villages as well as from the town itself. It follows the same twice-monthly rhythm as the country market up the peninsula in Carndonagh, which trades on the first and third Friday, giving Inishowen two separate market dates in most months. If you are travelling specifically for it, note the tight window: the stalls are cleared by three.

Getting There

Buncrana is on the R238 on the eastern side of the Inishowen peninsula, about twenty-five minutes from Derry and forty from Letterkenny by car. Local Link and regional bus services connect the town to Derry, Letterkenny and the rest of Inishowen, with stops close to Church Street. On-street parking along Church Street and the adjoining town centre streets serves the market, which takes up only a short stretch of footpath for its hour. Buncrana works well as a base for the wider peninsula, with the seafront, Buncrana Castle and the start of the Inishowen 100 driving route all within the town.
