Birr Mart on Pound Street holds its general cattle sale every Monday, with the ring opening at 10.30am. It is the smaller of Offaly’s two working marts and it serves the south of the county, taking stock from farms around Birr, Kinnitty, Shinrone and Banagher as well as across the Tipperary border near Roscrea. The Monday entry is a general mix rather than a specialist sale: store bullocks and heifers, forward stores and finished cattle all go through the same ring, so the trade on any given week reflects whatever the local farms have ready.
Cattle are penned before the ring opens so buyers can walk the sheds and assess weight, breeding and condition. The auctioneer calls each lot in person and buyers are largely local: finishers taking stores on to grass or meal, farmers replacing cattle they have just sold, and dealers buying for onward sale. Birr’s position on the county boundary gives it a slightly different mix to the midland marts further north, with more Tipperary and north Munster stock in the ring. The mart is a licensed auctioneering business trading under PSRA licence 2721 T, and it also runs a separate Thursday sale for dairy and suckler cattle, so farmers in the Birr area have two fixed sale days each week at the same yard.
Birr Mart is on Pound Street, a short walk from Emmet Square and the centre of Birr, and is signposted from the main approaches into the town on the N52 from Tullamore and the N62 from Roscrea. There is space on site for cars and livestock trailers, with additional public parking around the town centre. Birr has no railway station, so buses and cars are the way in.
