Ballinasloe Country Market

At Ballinasloe Social Centre · Society Street, Townparks, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, H53 X7T1

Home baking and produce stalls at Ballinasloe Country Market on Society Street

What to Expect

Ballinasloe is the County Galway branch of Country Markets Ltd, the co-operative network that has run producer-owned markets across Ireland since the 1940s. It trades every Friday morning on Society Street in the middle of Ballinasloe, and the model is the same one the co-operative uses nationwide: the people behind the tables are the people who grew, baked or made the goods, and the market operates as a society rather than a commercial pitch-letting operation.

That gives it a particular character. Expect home baking as the anchor, from brown bread and scones to tarts and cakes, alongside garden produce, eggs, preserves and jams, plants and cut flowers, and craft and knitwear from local makers. Trade is over by early afternoon and the best of the baking tends to be gone well before that, so this is a morning outing rather than a lunchtime one. Being an indoor market it runs regardless of the weather, which matters in East Galway through autumn and winter. Country Markets branches are open to new producer members, so anyone with a garden surplus or a baking habit can ask about joining rather than simply buying.

Getting There

Ballinasloe sits on the River Suck at the eastern edge of County Galway, just off the M6 Galway to Dublin motorway, which makes it one of the easiest East Galway towns to reach by car from either direction. Society Street is in the town centre, a short walk from the main town car parks. Ballinasloe has its own station on the Galway to Dublin rail line, roughly a 15-minute walk from the town centre, and Bus Eireann services on the same corridor stop in the town.
