Story Time for Preschoolers at Wexford Library

At Wexford Library · Mallin Street, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford

What to Expect

Wexford Library holds Story Time for preschoolers every Saturday at 11am at the library on Mallin Street. It is free and no booking is required, so families can turn up on the morning.

A Saturday slot makes this one of the more useful sessions in the county library programme, because it does not require a parent to be free on a weekday morning. Working parents and shared-custody weekends are the reason a lot of children never get to weekday storytimes, and the Saturday session removes that. Library staff read picture books aloud to the group, with the usual mix of holding up the pictures, doing the voices and letting the children join in on the repeated lines. Sessions are short enough to hold preschool attention.

Reading aloud to a small child is the single most reliable predictor of later reading ability, and free weekly sessions in a public library are the cheapest way to build the habit. Wexford Library also runs Rhyme Time for babies and toddlers on Wednesdays at 11am, plus the Chatterbooks junior book club and a young adult book club later in the month, so the branch programmes across the full age range.

Getting There

Wexford Library sits on Mallin Street at the northern end of Wexford town, close to Redmond Square and a few minutes’ walk from the Quay. Drivers coming on the N11 from Gorey or the N25 from Rosslare and New Ross should follow town centre signs and park at Redmond Square or on the Quay. Saturday morning is the busiest shopping period in town, so arriving a little early for an 11am start is sensible. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station on Redmond Place is nearby, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, and Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus services stop at Redmond Square and along the Quay.
