What to Expect

Wexford Library runs Rhyme Time for babies and toddlers every Wednesday at 11am at the library on Mallin Street. It is free, it is open to all ages within the baby and toddler bracket, and no booking is required, so you can simply walk in with the buggy.

Rhyme time is one of the most established things Irish public libraries do. Half an hour of songs, action rhymes and repetition builds the sound patterns that early reading is later built on, and it does it before a child can hold a book the right way up. For parents, particularly first-time parents and anyone new to the town, the weekly slot is often as valuable for the adults as for the children. Sessions are led by library staff and run informally. Babies who cry, crawl off or fall asleep halfway through are entirely normal and nobody minds.

Wexford Library runs the widest children’s programme in the county library network. Alongside the Wednesday rhyme time there is Story Time for preschoolers on Saturday mornings at 11am, the Chatterbooks junior book club for ages 8 to 12 on the third Tuesday of the month, and a young adult book club on the last Friday.

Getting There

Wexford Library is on Mallin Street towards the north end of Wexford town, a few minutes’ walk from Redmond Square and the Quay. Drivers arriving on the N11 from Gorey or the N25 from Rosslare and New Ross should follow signs for the town centre and use Redmond Square or the Quay car parks, both close by and both easier with a buggy than the steep older lanes. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station on Redmond Place is a short walk away, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line. Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus services stop at Redmond Square and along the Quay.
