What to Expect

Chatterbooks is Wexford Library’s junior book club for readers aged 8 to 12. It meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 4pm to 5pm in the library on Mallin Street, and it is free to take part. The next meeting in the autumn term falls on Tuesday 15 September 2026.

Chatterbooks is a national reading group model used widely in Irish and British public libraries, and it works on a simple footing. The group reads the same title between meetings, then comes together to talk about it, with library staff steering the conversation and pulling out things worth arguing over. There is no test at the end and no requirement to have finished the book, which matters for keeping reluctant readers in the room. Members also get to influence what the group reads next, and the library will usually have multiple copies of the chosen title set aside for the group to borrow.

Unlike the drop-in rhyme times and storytimes, Chatterbooks asks for online registration in advance through the library service. That is partly about group size and partly so staff know how many copies of each title to hold. Places are limited, so it is worth registering early in the term rather than turning up on the day.

Getting There

Wexford Library is on Mallin Street, at the northern end of Wexford town, a few minutes’ walk from Redmond Square and the Quay. Drivers arriving on the N11 from Gorey or the N25 from Rosslare should follow signs for the town centre and use the Quay or Redmond Square car parks, both within a short walk. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station on Redmond Place is close by, on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, which suits families travelling in from Enniscorthy or Gorey after school. Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus services stop at Redmond Square and along the Quay. There is limited street parking on Mallin Street itself.
