What to Expect

Shauna McCann runs a Halloween lantern-making workshop for children at the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh on Friday 30 October 2026 at 11am, timed for the mid-term break and the night before Halloween. Each child builds a papier mache lantern, working dried leaves and other organic material into the surface as the layers go on, so the finished shape carries real texture rather than being decorated flat.

Coloured papers and dyes are provided for personalising the lantern, and each finished piece is fitted with battery-operated fairy lights, which the centre describes as giving an autumn warm glow. Because they are paper and battery-lit rather than candle-lit, the lanterns are for indoor use only, and they need to dry before they can be taken home, so collection happens after the session rather than at the end of it. The workshop is listed as suitable for ages six and over. Tickets are £25 through the Strule box office. It sits alongside the centre’s wider Halloween programme, which includes two family shows the following morning, so a household with children of different ages can build a couple of days around it. Once purchased, tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Getting There

The Strule Arts Centre stands on Townhall Square in central Omagh, beside the River Strule and a couple of minutes from High Street. Omagh is reached on the A5 from Strabane and Derry to the north and from Ballygawley and the M1 to the south, on the A32 from Enniskillen and on the A505 from Cookstown. There are council car parks within a short walk of the square. A late-October Friday morning is a reasonably quiet time in town, but mid-term week can be busier than usual, so leave a margin. Ulsterbus services call at the Omagh bus centre on Mountjoy Road.
