The Range: Archery, Axe and Spear Throwing at Ferrycarrig

At Irish National Heritage Park · Ferrycarrig, Co. Wexford

Archery target and throwing axes set up on an outdoor range

What to Expect

The Range is the Irish National Heritage Park’s outdoor activity area for archery, axe throwing and spear throwing, and it opens every day through National Heritage Week 2026. Sessions last thirty minutes and run in rotation from 11am to 5pm, with a park instructor supervising. The minimum age is 10, which rules it out for younger children but makes it one of the few things on the county’s Heritage Week programme aimed squarely at teenagers.

It sits inside the park’s wider 35-acre site at Ferrycarrig, where full-scale reconstructions trace 9,000 years of settlement in Ireland along a woodland and riverside trail beside the Slaney, from a Mesolithic campsite through a crannog and ringfort to a Viking boatyard and a Norman motte. Two other activities run alongside The Range in the same nine days: a free interactive armoury of Prehistoric, Gaelic, Viking and Norman artefacts in the Crannog House, and free Ogham writing workshops on 18, 20 and 21 August. A family with a mixed age range can therefore split up for an hour and regroup afterwards.

Getting There

The Irish National Heritage Park is at Ferrycarrig, about 4km northwest of Wexford town on the N11 towards Enniscorthy and signposted from the roundabout at Ferrycarrig bridge. Parking is free on site. It is a ten-minute drive from Wexford town, and Bus Eireann services running between Wexford and Enniscorthy pass the entrance. The Range is outdoors, so it is weather dependent and worth phoning ahead on a wet day.
