The Red Door Country House sits at Fahan on the shore of Lough Swilly, at the gateway to the Inishowen peninsula, and its AA Rosette kitchen serves afternoon tea at weekends only. The restaurant describes it as a favourite for Saturday catch-ups, which is the right register: this is a country house dining room rather than a hotel lounge, and the sittings are smaller and quieter than the bigger castle and resort teas elsewhere in Donegal.
Saturday sittings run from 12:30pm to 4pm, Sunday from 12:30pm to 2pm. Booking ahead is advised for both, and it is worth flagging any dietary requirement when you call. The kitchen sources fruit, vegetables and meat locally wherever it can, and the same sourcing runs through the rest of the menu.
The Red Door does more than the tea if you want to make a longer visit of it. A full a la carte runs Saturday evenings from 5pm to 8:30pm and Sunday from 5pm to 7pm, and Sunday Lunch is served 12:30pm to 4pm. Bar food is available for something less formal.
Fahan is on the R238 on the western shore of Lough Swilly, about twenty minutes north of Letterkenny and twenty-five from Derry via the N13 and A2. It is the first stretch of the Inishowen peninsula, with Buncrana five minutes further on. The Red Door has its own car park. There is no bus stop at the door, so a car or taxi is the practical way to arrive, and the lough-shore road here is one of the more pleasant approaches in the county.
