What to Expect

New Ross Library combines story time and rhyme time into a single weekly session, running every Thursday at 11am at the library on Barrack Lane. It is free and open to all ages within the baby and toddler range. Unlike most of the county’s rhyme times, this one asks for online registration in advance rather than being a straight drop-in.

Pairing the two formats means the session moves between books read aloud and songs with actions, which holds a mixed age group better than either alone. Babies get the rhythm and repetition of the rhymes, and older toddlers get the story. Library staff lead it and the atmosphere is informal, with parents and carers staying with their children throughout.

The registration requirement is worth planning around. Places are set in advance so staff know how many families to expect, which means turning up on the morning without having booked may not get you in. New Ross Library also runs a junior book club for ages 9 to 12 on the first Tuesday of the month and the Superpowers Book Club for children with dyslexia on the third Thursday.

Getting There

New Ross Library is on Barrack Lane in the older part of New Ross, up from the quays and within a few minutes’ walk of South Street. New Ross is a steep town, so if you are pushing a buggy the approach from the town centre car parks is easier than coming up directly from the quay. Drivers from Wexford town take the N25 and cross at the New Ross bypass bridge before following town centre signs. From Waterford the N25 arrives from the west and from Kilkenny the R700 runs down along the Barrow. Bus Eireann services linking Waterford, New Ross and Wexford stop in the town centre.
