Mushroom Log Cultivation Workshop, Mullaghmatt Community Garden

At Mullaghmatt Community Garden · Mullaghmatt, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan

Mushrooms growing on an inoculated hardwood log

What to Expect

GAP Ireland runs this free two-hour session at Mullaghmatt Community Garden in Monaghan town on Saturday 3 October, with doors from 10.50am and the workshop itself running 11am to 1pm. It is a practical class in the log method of growing mushrooms, the low-input approach that suits an Irish back garden or an allotment corner far better than an indoor grow kit. The session starts with identifying different species of wood and which mushrooms will grow on which, then moves on to the technique itself: how to inoculate a log with mushroom spawn, how to store and maintain the logs once inoculated, and how long to wait before anything appears.

The last part covers harvesting and cooking, and the workshop finishes with a tasting of home-grown mushrooms cooked and served with bread, so participants leave with a sense of what the end result actually tastes like rather than just the theory of getting there. It runs under a gazebo in the garden and is open to all ages, which makes it workable as a family morning as well as a growers’ session. It is funded through PEACEPLUS and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, which is why there is no charge. Registration is mandatory through the organiser’s booking form, and anyone with gluten-free or other dietary requirements should say so in advance so the tasting can be adjusted.
