What to Expect

The Food and Drink Society runs a two and a half hour Spanish wine and food pairing at the Greenore Railway Saloon in Dundalk on Friday 18 September 2026. The evening works through Spanish wines matched to Spanish food, with the pairings explained as you taste rather than left to guesswork, and it is pitched as a relaxed sitting rather than a formal wine class. It is the second of two tastings the society runs in the same bar in September, following the Irish whiskey and Oriel chocolate evening the previous Friday.

The venue is one of the better rooms in Dundalk for this kind of night. The Greenore Railway Saloon is on Quay Street in the town, not in Greenore village, and it takes its name from the Dundalk to Greenore railway line that once ran alongside. The bar was rebuilt after a fire in 1905 and restored again from 1988 by its current owner, a cabinet maker, so the dark woods, red ceiling and tiled floor survived where most Irish bars were stripped out. Part of the building is modelled on a nineteenth-century railway waiting room. Tickets are booked in advance on Eventbrite with refunds available up to seven days before, and prices are not published on the public listing. Over 18s.

Getting There

Quay Street runs east out of Dundalk’s Market Square towards the harbour, about a ten-minute walk from the town centre and close to the Spirit Store on Georges Quay. Clarke Station on the Dublin to Belfast line is around twenty minutes’ walk, and Bus Eireann coaches from Dublin and Belfast stop on Long Walk. There is on-street parking along the quay, usually easier to find in the evening than town-centre parking. Taxi ranks are on Park Street and Clanbrassil Street.
