What to Expect

Carlingford Food Tours runs a three-hour guided walk through the medieval village with food and drink stops built into the route. The group meets at the Village Green at 2.30pm and finishes at The Brass Door at 5.30pm, so it covers the length of the village on foot at an easy pace. Along the way the stops take in Fishy Dishy, McKevitts Village Hotel, the Carlingford Arms, Ghan House and The Brass Door, with local producers serving samples at each.

The tour is as much about the village as the plates. The route runs past the medieval core, so the guiding covers Carlingford’s history and its setting on the lough between Slieve Foye and the Mourne Mountains alongside the food. Tours run on Saturday afternoons through the summer, and the operator also lists a Haunted Carlingford Food Tour and a Christmas Carlingford Food Tour on the same three-hour, €75 format for later in the year, so the seasonal versions swap the storytelling rather than the structure. Tickets are €75 per person and are booked online in advance. Because the group size is limited and the stops are pre-arranged with each venue, walk-ups are not practical. Wear shoes you can walk cobbles in and arrive hungry rather than fed.

Getting There

Carlingford is on the Cooley Peninsula on the R173, about twenty minutes’ drive from Dundalk and fifteen from Newry, reached off junction 18 of the M1. The Village Green is in the middle of the village beside the main public car park, which is the easiest place to leave a car for the afternoon. There is a limited bus service from Dundalk, so check timetables before relying on it. The Carlingford Greenway from Omeath ends within walking distance of the meeting point.
