Longford’s library branches run free hands-on workshops for children right through to the end of August 2026, the making-and-doing side of the wider Summer Stars reading programme. Rather than one event, each branch has its own slots across the week, so a family can pick whichever town is nearest or move between branches through the month. Everything is free. Some sessions are drop-in and some need to be booked, and the popular ones fill quickly.
The August programme spreads across the county. Longford Library runs a drop-in arts and crafts hour every Tuesday from 3pm to 4pm. Edgeworthstown has the busiest list, with Wednesday movie afternoons, giant games sessions, a pencil drawing workshop, Mario Kart tournaments split by age, a children’s photography workshop and a Saturday card swap. Ballymahon has an all-day Heritage at Play drop-in and a summer arts and crafts hour. Lanesboro has storytelling with a harpist, a local history walking tour for ages 7 and up, and a family film afternoon. Drumlish ran sensory play sessions for younger children on Thursday mornings. A visiting storyteller toured three branches in a single day in mid-August. Dates and times shift week to week, so the library events calendar is the place to check before travelling.
The branches are spread across the county, so most families have one within a short drive. Edgeworthstown and Longford town are both on the Dublin to Sligo rail line. Ballymahon is on the N55 in the south, Lanesborough on the R392 by the Shannon, and Drumlish and Granard sit in the north of the county. Each branch has parking nearby.
