Meet the Cheesemaker: Leitrim Hill Creamery

What to Expect

Leitrim Hill Creamery opens its gates for a two-hour guided visit on Sunday 23 August 2026, running from 11am to 1pm. The creamery is a micro-dairy and smallholding goat farm at Drumcong, founded by Lisa Gifford, who converted a hay shed into a working artisan dairy. The visit takes in the farm and the make-room, covers how the cheeses are produced, and finishes with a tasting of the range.

The cheeses here are small-batch and raw milk, made with milk from the creamery’s own herd of goats and from partner farms in the surrounding area. The session is billed as an intimate one rather than a mass tour, so numbers are limited and booking ahead through Eventbrite is required. The event is part of the Meet the Cheesemaker series run by the Centre of Food Culture Ireland, which brings visitors onto Irish farmhouse cheese producers’ own ground to hear the making explained by the person who does it. Expect farmyard conditions underfoot and dress accordingly.

Getting There

Drumcong sits between Carrick-on-Shannon and Drumshanbo in south Leitrim, a short drive off the R280 and around 15 minutes from Carrick-on-Shannon. Coming from the N4, take the Carrick-on-Shannon exit and follow the road towards Drumshanbo and Lough Allen. There is no public transport to the farm gate, so drive or share a car, and park where the organisers direct on the day. Bring footwear suitable for a working farmyard.
