Hola Monaghan! Loteria Night at Monaghan Peace Campus

At Monaghan Peace Campus · Plantation Road, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan, H18 RP20

Hand-painted loteria cards laid out on a table for a family game night

What to Expect

Visual artist Andrea Soto is running a bilingual twist on loteria, the traditional Guatemalan lottery game, at Monaghan Peace Campus on Friday 18 September 2026 from 5pm to 7pm. The hook is that the deck is not the standard one. Soto has hand-painted an original set of cards drawn from Monaghan’s own landscapes, wildlife, culture and traditions, so the images being called out over the course of the game are local rather than imported.

Loteria works much like bingo played with pictures instead of numbers, which is what makes it work across languages and age groups. The caller names each card in Spanish and English as it is drawn, players mark their boards, and there are prizes for the winners. Soto describes the evening as a mix of art, storytelling and cultural exchange, with players picking up vocabulary in both languages as they go. The listing is explicit that it is family friendly and open to children and adults together, and that all ages are welcome. Places are limited and booked through Eventbrite. The evening falls on the same date as Culture Night in Monaghan, which Monaghan County Council has listed for 18 September running from 5pm to 10pm, so there will be other things on around the town the same evening.
