What to Expect

Galway Atlantaquaria, the National Aquarium of Ireland, sets aside two evenings in August for Quiet Nights, a reduced-capacity opening built for visitors who find a busy aquarium hard going. The aquarium describes it as accommodating a much smaller number of visitors, with splashes turned off and loud noises tuned down. Lighting is softened, the number of people in the building at any one time is capped, and the Audio Visual Room is set aside as a quiet space where anyone who needs a break can step off the exhibition floor for a few minutes. Entry runs in timed slots at 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm on both evenings, which keeps groups spread out across the building rather than moving through it together.

The collection itself is built around Irish waters and runs from the freshwater exhibit through the ray pool to the larger marine tanks, so a Quiet Night covers the same route as a daytime visit with far fewer people in each room. During normal opening the aquarium runs talks and feeding tours every weekend, bank holiday and school holiday, focused on native species and conservation along the Galway coast. Getting There

Galway Atlantaquaria is on the seafront at Salthill, about 3km west of Galway city centre and an easy walk along the promenade from the Claddagh. City buses run from Eyre Square out along the coast road to Salthill and stop close to the aquarium. There is pay and display parking along the promenade and in the Toft car park beside the building, which is generally quieter in the evening than during the day.
