What to Expect

Caves to Castle is a combined ticket that pairs Fermanagh’s two best-known paid attractions into a single day. At Enniskillen Castle you get the castle site and its museums, covering the town’s history and the Inniskillings regimental collections, in a tour of around sixty minutes. Marble Arch Caves then takes you underground to follow the Owenbrean River through the limestone, on a guided tour of sixty to seventy-five minutes covering about 1.5 kilometres on foot.

The two sit about twenty-five minutes apart by road, so the combination makes a comfortable full day rather than a rush. The caves are the more demanding half: steady walking, steps, and a constant cool temperature underground whatever the weather is doing above. The castle is the easier and more flexible half, and its longer opening hours make it the sensible one to do second if the cave tour times dictate the order.

• Bring a jacket and proper shoes for the caves. It stays cold underground in August.

Getting There

Marble Arch Caves sits on the Marlbank Road in the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, signposted from the A32 south of Enniskillen via Florencecourt, roughly twenty-five minutes from the town. Enniskillen Castle is in the middle of Enniskillen at the west bridge, with the town centre car parks a short walk away. Drivers reach Enniskillen from Dublin and Cavan on the A509 and A4, from Belfast on the M1 and A4, and from Omagh on the A32. There is no public transport to the caves, so a car is effectively required for the pairing, and the final stretch of the Marlbank Road is narrow.
