Bat Walks at Crom Estate

What to Expect

Crom’s rangers run a ninety-minute bat walk around the estate, starting with an indoor talk at the Estate Hub before heading outdoors. The talk covers which bat species are found on the estate, and the walk then takes you out to view some of their roosts. Crom’s mix of ancient oak woodland, old estate buildings and lough shore gives it a strong bat population, which is why this walk has been a recurring fixture on the estate’s events calendar.

The route is mostly flat gravel path, so it suits children and anyone who would rather not be scrambling in the dark. Dogs on short leads are welcome on the walk itself, though they cannot come into the indoor talk at the start. Bring a torch, wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather, since the second half of the evening is entirely outdoors and September evenings at Upper Lough Erne cool off fast.

Getting There

Crom Estate is on the shore of Upper Lough Erne roughly three miles from Newtownbutler in south Fermanagh, signposted from the Newtownbutler road. From Enniskillen the route is the A4 east then the A34 south through Lisnaskea, about forty minutes. Coming from Cavan or Monaghan, cross at Belturbet or Clones and pick up the A34. There is a large car park at the visitor centre near the Estate Hub. Arrive with daylight to spare so you can find the meeting point before the talk starts, and note that the estate roads are unlit once the walk moves outdoors, which is what the torch is for. There is no public transport to the estate gate.
