What to Expect

OURganic Gardens at Cashel na gCorr near Gortahork runs a garden and kitchen workshop on Sunday 23 August 2026, timed as its National Heritage Week event. Doors open at 9:45am, the programme runs from 10am to 2pm, and it splits between the growing side and the preserving side of the same subject.

The garden half is about heritage crops and seeds and how to save them, with the focus on local varieties, including the Gortahork Cabbage and the Lumper potato. Both carry real weight in this part of Donegal: the Gortahork Cabbage is a named local landrace, and the Lumper is the potato variety most associated with the pre-Famine cottier economy. There is a talk on heritage seeds alongside the hands-on work.

The kitchen half is practical preserving. Participants make apple chutney, pickles and pickling vinegar, which is the traditional answer to what you do with a glut in late August. Lunch is included in the day and comes from the same thinking: soup, soda bread, chutney, pickles and cake. The garden welcomes all ages and there is free parking on site. Getting There

Gortahork, or Gort an Choirce, is in the Cloughaneely Gaeltacht in north-west Donegal, on the N56 between Falcarragh and Gweedore, with Letterkenny about 45km away to the south-east and Dunfanaghy roughly 15km to the east. Cashel na gCorr is a townland outside the village, so use the F92 TV06 Eircode rather than the place name when navigating. There is free parking at the gardens. Bus Eireann and Local Link services run along the N56 corridor through Gortahork, but they are infrequent and will not match a 9:45am start, so a car is the realistic way in.
