What to Expect

Ardara Distillery is where Sliabh Liag Distillers make all their spirits, including An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin and the Ardara and Sliabh Liag whiskeys. Guided tours run every day at midday, 2pm, 4pm and 5pm, with a shorter Sunday schedule of midday, 2pm and 4pm. The tour walks through the working distillery and sets out what the company calls an alternative side of Irish whiskey making, drawing on the county’s older, unlicensed distilling traditions and translating them into a smoky modern spirit.

Two options are offered. The tour on its own costs €15 per person. The tour with a gin and whiskey tasting costs €25, and takes in An Dúlamán, which is distilled with five species of Donegal seaweed, alongside the house whiskeys. Children aged eight to eighteen go free when accompanied, and under-eights are not admitted. Guide dogs only.

Ardara itself is a good base for the visit. The village is a long-standing centre for Donegal tweed and hand knitting, and it sits on the coastal loop between Killybegs, Glengesh Pass and the beaches at Maghera and Loughros Point, so the distillery slots easily into a day already spent on that stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Getting There

Ardara is on the N56 in southwest Donegal, about thirty minutes from Killybegs, forty-five from Donegal Town and just under an hour from Letterkenny. There is no rail service in west Donegal and bus cover is limited to Local Link routes, so a car is the practical way to get here. There is parking in the village and at the distillery. The Glengesh Pass road south towards Glencolmcille is one of the most scenic approaches if you are coming from that direction.
