What to Expect

Donegal County Museum opens an exhibition on the Polish artist Casimir Markievicz on 13 October 2026, running until 30 November. The exhibition looks at his work from 1903 to 1913, the decade he spent in Dublin, and at the Polish and Irish connections that came with his marriage to Constance Markievicz.

The show is part of Donegal County Council’s cultural programme accompanying Ireland’s EU Presidency, which runs from July to November 2026 with a deliberate focus on Polish and Irish heritage and exchange. Other strands in the same programme include a Donegal Chamber Orchestra gala concert of Polish composers at An Grianán Theatre on Sunday 25 October, a Eurodesk Time to Move event at Europe Direct in Letterkenny Central Library in October, and the unveiling of a plaque to Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, the Polish explorer whose famine relief work in Ireland is the reason for the commemoration. The museum’s Rockwell Kent exhibition, marking the centenary of the American artist’s 1926 stay in the Glenlough valley, runs until late September, so the Markievicz show follows it in the same building.

Getting There

Donegal County Museum is on the High Road in Letterkenny, in the former workhouse building a short walk uphill from the town centre and the Market Square. Letterkenny is reached by the N13 from Derry and Bridgend, the N56 from the west of the county and the N15 from Ballybofey and the south. There is parking at the museum and further public parking in the town centre a few minutes away. The Letterkenny bus centre is within walking distance.
