Rock Art with Liga Valga at Carlow County Library

What to Expect

Carlow County Library brings artist Liga Valga in for a Heritage Week workshop aimed squarely at older children, aged 9 to 12. The session works through the medium and the motifs of rock art, giving children a way into one of the oldest visual languages in the country and letting them make their own work from it. Carlow is a reasonable place to run it, given the county’s prehistoric sites including the Browneshill Dolmen on the Hacketstown Road.

Two two-hour sessions run on the Friday, one at 10:00am and one at 2:00pm, so families can pick a morning or an afternoon. The nine-to-twelve age bracket is narrower than most library holiday programming, which usually means the making is pitched at a level that will not bore children who have outgrown craft tables. It is free, and the council states plainly that booking is essential and that places should be taken early.

Getting There

Carlow County Library is on Tullow Street in the centre of Carlow Town, walking distance from the Shopping Centre and Potato Market car parks. Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line is about ten minutes away on foot. Bus Eireann and JJ Kavanagh services from Dublin, Kilkenny, Waterford, Tullow and Bagenalstown stop nearby, so children coming in from the county’s villages can be dropped close to the door. Street parking on Tullow Street is metered during the working day.
