Bat Walk at Sigginstown Castle

At Sigginstown Castle · Sigginstown, Tomhaggard, Co. Wexford, Y35 XK7D

Bats emerging at dusk over an old stone tower house

What to Expect

Sigginstown Castle runs an evening bat walk on Friday 28 August, starting at 8.30pm. Old tower houses and their outbuildings are among the better bat roosts in the Irish countryside, with thick stone walls, unheated upper floors and gaps in the masonry that suit several of the species found here, so a sixteenth-century castle with a walled yard and open farmland around it is a reasonable place to go looking.

The castle is a privately restored tower house on the Norman Way in south Wexford, near Tomhaggard, and it programmes a steady run of small-scale events through the year alongside its open tours: craft and textile workshops, botanical printing, open music sessions and, in October, a live action role play weekend. Numbers on the bat walk will be modest given the size of the site, so contact the castle ahead rather than turning up. Bring a torch for the walk back across the field parking, and wear boots, since the ground is grass and gravel rather than path.

Getting There

Sigginstown Castle is on the Norman Way in south Wexford, between Tomhaggard and Kilmore, roughly thirty minutes by car from Wexford town and twenty from Rosslare Europort. Parking is in a designated field beside the castle and the entrance driveway is gravel. The approach lanes are narrow and unlit, so take it slowly on the way in and out at night. There is no public transport to the door.
