Unreconciled

At Mermaid Arts Centre · Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow

A single chair lit on an empty stage for a solo theatre performance

Unreconciled, a solo play written by Jay Sefton with Mark Basquill, comes to Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray for one performance on Wednesday 21 October 2026, followed by a post-show panel discussion. The play draws on Sefton’s own experience as a young performer whose theatre director was later defrocked and named in a grand jury report into the sexual abuse of minors, and it sets that story against the backdrop of 1980s Philadelphia. It has won the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association Award for both Best New Play and Best Solo Performance, and a feature-length documentary following the production is currently in development.

What to Expect

The performance runs 75 minutes, followed by a 30-minute panel discussion, giving the audience a structured space to sit with the material afterwards rather than filing straight out. Reviewers have pointed to the show’s mix of unflinching honesty and surprising humour as it examines how institutions denied survivors justice for decades. The show carries content notes for references to smoking, drinking and the clerical sexual abuse of minors, and is recommended for ages 16 and over. This is not a light evening out, but a piece built around testimony and reckoning, staged as one man’s account rather than a dramatised composite.
