Wexford Walled Town Day 2026

What to Expect

Walled Town Day is Wexford town’s annual celebration of the medieval defences that still ring parts of the old town, and in 2026 it lands on Saturday 15 August from 1pm to 5pm. The gathering point is the green area behind Westgate Tower and the Heritage Centre, the best surviving stretch of the town wall and the only one of Wexford’s original gate towers still standing. Admission is free and the afternoon is run as a family friendly event by Wexford Borough District.

The day also opens National Heritage Week in the town, so it acts as a curtain raiser for the run of talks, tours and open days that follow across the county over the following week. Wexford is a member of the Irish Walled Towns Network, the group of Irish towns and cities that still hold significant standing medieval fortifications, and Walled Town Day is the local expression of that shared programme. Because the site sits directly against the wall and the tower, it is an easy afternoon to combine with a walk along the surviving ramparts and a look into the Westgate Heritage Centre itself.

Getting There

Westgate sits at the north end of Wexford town, at the top of Slaney Street and Abbey Street, roughly ten minutes on foot from the Quay and the Bull Ring. Drivers coming on the N11 or N25 should follow signs for the town centre and use the Quay or Redmond Square car parks, then walk up through the old lanes. Wexford O’Hanrahan railway station on Redmond Place is about a twelve minute walk away and is served by the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line. Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus services stop on the Quay and at Redmond Square. Street parking near Westgate itself is limited and the surrounding lanes are narrow, so the larger car parks are the safer bet.
