What to Expect

Wexford Racecourse parkrun is a free, timed 5k held every Saturday at 9:30am inside the grounds of Wexford Racecourse at Bettyville on the Newtown Road, a short distance from the centre of Wexford town. Running on a racecourse gives the event a different character to a park or woodland course: the route uses the wide, level ground inside the racecourse boundary, land that is otherwise given over to National Hunt racing. The track has a long history, with racing recorded on the site from the 1870s, and it was reconfigured from a right handed to a left handed circuit in 2015, after which the course dropped flat racing and concentrated on jumps.

As with every parkrun, taking part is free and the whole event is organised by local volunteers, from the run director and marshals to the timekeepers and barcode scanners. Anyone can walk, jog or run the 5k, and finishing times are recorded through the barcode system, so first timers register once at parkrun.ie and bring a barcode, printed or on a phone, to be scanned at the line. The event has built a steady following among Wexford town runners as a low key start to the weekend. Because the ground is flat and open it suits buggies and people building toward a first 5k as well as club athletes chasing a fast time, and the tail walker means nobody finishes last on their own.

Getting There

The racecourse is on the Newtown Road on the western edge of Wexford town, roughly a 20 minute walk or a five minute drive from the Bull Ring, with on site parking available for participants. Wexford’s O’Hanrahan railway station and the main bus stops in the town centre are both within reach on foot for anyone travelling in by public transport.
