Wexford Drama take over the Wexford Arts Centre theatre for four nights in late October with The Night Alive. The company is one of the county’s established amateur groups and this is their autumn production, following the summer main-stage outing that other local companies take to the National Opera House. A four-night run in the Arts Centre theatre is the standard shape for a local drama production here.
The Arts Centre theatre is a small black-box style room in a converted eighteenth-century market house on Cornmarket, which suits contemporary drama better than a large auditorium: the audience is close and the staging can be spare. The run lands in the middle of Wexford Festival Opera fortnight, when the town is full of visitors, so the Arts Centre programmes work that gives people an alternative to the opera without competing directly with it.
Wexford Arts Centre is on Cornmarket in the centre of Wexford town, minutes on foot from the Bull Ring, Main Street and the quay. Irish Rail runs Dublin Connolly to O’Hanrahan Station in around two hours and the station is on the quayfront. Bus Eireann and Wexford Bus coaches stop in the town centre. Quayfront car parks are the nearest, but they fill early in the last two weeks of October.
