At Comeragh Mountains · Moanyarha bog entrance, Glendaloughin, Co. Waterford
Mountaineering Ireland runs its Happy Hiking Hill Skills Day in the Waterford Comeraghs on Saturday 26 September 2026. It runs from 10am to 4pm and costs €25 per person, meeting at the Moanyarha bog entrance at Glendaloughin and following an 8km route.
The day is aimed squarely at novices. A qualified instructor covers movement skills on rough ground, basic navigation and map reading, what equipment actually earns its place in a rucksack, and the safety judgements that matter on an Irish hill: weather, daylight, and knowing when to turn back. It is deliberately not suitable for anyone who has already done Mountain Skills training. Both members and non-members of Mountaineering Ireland can book. Participants need to come properly kitted out with hiking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, a rucksack, map and compass, and enough food and water for a full day out. The Comeraghs are the obvious training ground for anyone in the south east who wants to walk Coumshingaun or the Mahon Falls horseshoe with more confidence. Booking is through Eventbrite, with refunds available if requested at least seven days in advance. Only the one date is scheduled, so places are limited.
The Comeragh Mountains sit inland between Dungarvan, Kilmacthomas and Clonmel, reached off the R676 and the network of local roads running up towards Mahon Falls and Rathgormack. From Waterford city, take the N25 west and turn north at Kilmacthomas; from Dungarvan, head north east on the R672. There is no public transport to the meeting points, so a car or a lift is essential, and mountain roads here are single track in places with limited turning. Exact meeting instructions are sent to participants after booking, so check your confirmation email before setting out.
