At National Opera House · High Street, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford
Solve-Along-A-Murder-She-Wrote is a screening of a single episode of the Angela Lansbury detective series, wrapped in a live comedy show. The episode on the night is Paint Me a Murder, and host Tim Benzie stops the tape at intervals to run games, hand out prizes and push the audience into naming a killer before Jessica Fletcher gets there. Benzie is an award-winning playwright, a Royal Vauxhall Tavern panto veteran and co-producer of PopHorror events, and he built the format out of an unembarrassed fondness for the show rather than a sneer at it.
The running order includes a race to identify the murderer scored on what the show calls the Fameometer and the Suspiciometer, a Cabot Cove trivia quiz, a singalong to a reworked version of the theme tune, and clips and background on the guest stars. Time Out named it one of its 50 Great Nights Out and singled out the host. The production has toured widely and played sold-out rooms across several countries and festivals. It runs for two nights at the National Opera House, on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, both at 7:30pm, in a building that is Ireland’s national opera house and the main receiving venue in Wexford town. No prior knowledge of the series is needed, though people who know Cabot Cove’s murder rate will get more out of the quiz.
The National Opera House is on High Street in Wexford town centre, up the hill from the quays and a couple of minutes’ walk from Main Street and the Bullring. O’Hanrahan station on Redmond Square is about a ten-minute walk, with Irish Rail services from Dublin Connolly and Rosslare Europort. By road it is roughly an hour and forty minutes from Dublin on the M11 and N11, and about 45 minutes from Rosslare Europort on the N25. There is no parking at the venue itself, so use one of the town-centre car parks and walk up.
